JO AVILA

Jonathan S. Avila took up photography back in 1988 because he wanted to learn how to use a Polaroid camera. It was only after two classes in basic photography that he realized that a Polaroid camera was simply another instamatic camera.

He then went back to the Ateneo de Manila University to render service by working as the lone staff member of the photography department of the Jesuit Communications Foundation.

Jo Avila Photography was set up as a formal business in 1997. The client list has been as diverse as the interests of Jonathan S. Avila. MANUEL LIBRES LIBRODO

A portrait is a landscape of emotions” - Manuel Libres Librodo

Written by: Cecile Janicek (Mar 2010)

Manny, as he is more popularly known as, first coined that phrase. His images portrayed a deep world of emotions that a face could evoke. He declares himself inspired mostly by portrait photography because he feels there is so much to explore in the human face. “Be it on the streets of Nepal, in a Balinese classroom, on a beach in the Philippines, or at a temple in Thailand, I am drawn to faces that have stories to tell.” says Manny.
Born in the small town of Lambunao in the Philippines as the fourth of six children, Manny's home had no electricity in his earliest years, and his trips to bigger cities were few. But, he was very academically inclined and earned the honor of valedictorian of his high school class. His immense talent as a photographer, however, grew slowly. “Initially, my love for photography was confined to just being a spectator of beauty. I like colors and patterns. I like displays of majesty and splendor. I like to experience unique cultures. All of these interests eventually led to travel and photography entered the mix merely as a means to document my journeys. At first I carried a simple point and shoot camera and always wanted to be in the picture myself. After all, how would friends and relatives know that I was there if I didn't appear in the photo? So I posed whenever, wherever and however” states Manny.

Looking at his images, one would not guess that Manny has had no formal training Photography. His appreciation of beautiful images, notably those of Steve McCurry, has inspired him to greater depths.
But Manny did not simply skim the surface… he dove deep! He says his brother is his “manual” as he doesn't like reading camera instruction guides. “My brother, Jose Librodo, is my walking manual. Through osmosis, I possibly absorbed some of his artistic energy as well.”

Meticulous by nature, Manny could not help but strive for excellence in this art form. And in a short time he emerges with a style so recognizably his! He is a consistent winner of various international photography competitions. His work has been acclaimed in Europe, North America and Asia and worldwide organizations such as UNICEF. He has graced the annual UNICEF calendar now for over three years (the cover in the 2009 calendar no less), handpicked for his moving and deeply touching images of children from all walks of life throughout various continents. A recent feather in his cap was being one of the Top Five Photographers (that you have not heard of) in 2009 by Photoshop giant Scott Kelby!
Today, Manny’s definition of Portraiture extends beyond the face to a reflection of Life. His images continue to tell the story he sees. He can be called a director of sorts as he continues to draw from all around him the many stories his images tell.
“A picture is worth a thousand words. A lyrical picture does not just tell us a story of a thousand words. Rather it tells us a thousand stories of a million words. It sings a song that speaks straight to our hearts,” concludes Manny.
Manny holds workshops all over the world; Australia, US, Canada, Dubai, Hongkong, Malaysia, Singapore, Holland just to name a few. His following grows in numbers and his workshops are often closed days after publicly announcing them.
Aly Reyes writes about Manny… “Manny has an incredible eye when it comes to looking for the best light. And he translates it to an image in his camera that would reflect modern art. And just by being with him, he somehow infects you with his photography prowess and you yourself will be able to capture the beauty of what he sees from your own camera. That is Manny's magic!”
Magic indeed! What else is in store for this trail blazer? “I am still learning and evolving. I might explore wedding photography. I would like to inspire more people and travel more. …of course, my ultimate dream, is to one day publish a coffee table book.”
Today Manny is currently enjoying a sabbatical from his regular teaching profession in Bangkok Thailand where he is a professor of Psychology and History at Ruamrudee International School. He is single and is also passionate about badminton, having coached his school’s varsity team for the past 5 years.

My Life is Brilliant... Photography has opened my eyes to both the wonders and madness of the world. I would like to capture each and every image both in my memories and camera. This is the WORLD as I see it. In my short span of shooting photos, I have learned so much from people like Parc Cruz, Manny Librodo, KR Abella, Arnel Murillo, Richard Larrios and many more. Their teachings have made me a better photographer and somehow there is still a sea of inspiration and teachings that I want to absorb. It has been 3 years since I started this hobby, it turned out to be a passion.

PARC CRUZ

Photographer's Note:

In July of 2005, I decided to seriously get into photography as a hobby. It has been one of my aspirations. I would often look at other photo websites, admire their work and wonder if I could do them myself

I started with an complicated point and shoot camera (Canon A95)and for two months, it became my handy accessory. I brought it everywhere I went and I took photos even while I was driving. Taking every imaginable object I can find in the house or on the streets, I have amassed quite a simple gallery that I set up a temporary blog site.

Not even imagining that I would grow into this hobby and that it would absorb me in, by September 2005, I went for an upgrade. With my Canon 350D, I began feeling like a real photographer. And by November 2005, I was going full-blast.

I do not have any formal training. I did not have teachers to guide me through. All I learned, I learned from my peers. I still continue to learn from them and so far, my love affair with photography seems to be an ongoing awe-inspiring experience. I do not hope this to stop.
